As at 1150 hours today 19 March 2020, 220843 confirmed cases of COVID -19 and 8988 deaths have been reported from more than 144 countries globally https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/. The top 10 worst-affected countries are; China (80,928 cases), Italy (35713), Iran (17361), Spain (14769), South Korea (8565), Germany (12327), France (9134), USA (9464), Switzerland (3115) and UK (2626).
To date 27 African countries have reported confirmed cases of COVID – 19 with 5 being SADC member states ( South Africa, Namibia, Eswatini, Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia) In neighboring South Africa, the South Africa Department of Health has confirmed there are 116 people who have contracted Covid-19 in South Africa as of 18/03/20. The National Institute for Communicable diseases has conducted over 3070 tests and confirmed 116 Covid-19 cases which it updates daily on their website: http://www.nicd.ac.za/covid-19-update-19/. Zambia also reported its first 2 confirmed cases yesterday 18 March 2020.
Back home, the Ministry of Health and Child Care has assured the nation that to date there are no confirmed cases of COVID – 19 in Zimbabwe. President E.D Mnangagwa on Tuesday 17th March 2020 announced that Government was declaring the pandemic a state of national disaster, to enable the Government to mobilise resources and curb the spread of the disease. The President is today expected to launch a coronavirus national preparedness and response plan.
